Origins and motivations of CCPN

CCPN is funded by the BBSRC with the aim of performing a service for NMR spectroscopists analogous to that of CCP4 in the X-ray community. The background and organisation of CCPN are described in the original 1999 CCPN background, the CCPN charter, and the Founding Meeting. BBSRC logo

Simple Membership of CCPN is free; access to software and to some CCPN arrangements is limited to full members. For-profit organisations and their employees pay a yearly fee to obtain full membership.

The CCPN APIs and the CcpNmr FormatConverter are completely free for everyone under the LGPL license.

CcpNmr Analysis and Clouds are distributed under the CCPN Software License, which grants the right to use software for an unlimited period, and may allow modification and re-distribution under certain conditions. Software updates and support (if any) is limited to current members. Software authors retain the right to distribute their programs independently of CCPN.

The main objectives of CCPN are:

  • To promote the exchange of ideas through the arrangement of meetings and workshops
  • To establish a universal data model for harvesting and exchange of data between different NMR related software packages, and develop associated subroutine libraries
  • To develop software packages using the common data model to perform standard functions required during the determination of macromolecular structures by NMR
  • To promote the use of the common data model and to diffuse NMR related software made by third parties, especially those that make use of  the data model, within the NMR community

The work of CCPN on data exchange initially focuses on the development of a generally acceptable data model standard, along with Application Program Interfaces to handle data that conform to this standard.

The work on new software packages will involve developing the CcpNmr suite of programs, starting with the programs FormatConverter, Processing, and Analysis (loosely inspired by ANSIG. and Sparky). For more information on the software development read the ‘Quick Guide’.

All the work produced by CCPN will be made available through this web site.
